Starting Seed in the Winter

06/25/2019

Seed Starting in Winter☃️ Although natural germination is the best way to start most tree seeds, horticulturalists have consistent results by assisting winter growing with various techniques to mimic nature. Many tree seeds require stratification, a period of time to induce a cold period by placing the seeds in a freezer or refrigerator before planting.

Growing instructions vary widely with tree species, follow instructions found online and again with orders for successful winter planting.

A few trees and shrubs that perform well when winter sowed include:

Oaks

Maples

Crepe myrtle

Nut trees, such as hazelnuts, hickories, walnuts, etc.

Holly

Beech

Ash

Horse chestnut

Red bud Tulip poplars

Viburnum Elderberry

Euonymus Serviceberry

Elm

Birch

Chokecherry

Honey locust

Lilac Learn
